THE FIRST PATENTED FILTER GENERATING A PULSED ELECTRIC FIELD IN WATER WITH ANTIBACTERIAL AND DE-SCALING FUNCTIONS
The use of PEF (Pulsed Electric Field) technology originated
in the food industry due to its ability to reduce the presence
of microorganisms in food. Our department has
developed a high-frequency, low-voltage variable electric
field generated directly in water, achieving two significant
effects. It prevents the precipitation of calcium carbonate in
its crystalline calcite form, instead promoting its persistence
in a more amorphous and water-soluble state while
encouraging the formation of aragonite nanocrystals. Due
to their structure, these nanocrystals do not aggregate into
scale deposits but are instead carried away by the water flow.
PEF treatment can also be successfully applied to control
biofilm growth in water. The rapid transients of the pulse
waveform generate induced currents that interfere with
membrane ion channels and with the chemical signalling
used by bacteria to aggregate. As a result, ARAGON
drastically reduces bacterial adhesion to the inner surfaces
of pipelines by impairing bacterial motility and their ability to
secrete the adhesive extracellular matrix.
